I often get requests from my clients to help them to connect and communicate with their spirit guides. Some are remarkably surprised when they encounter their animal guides during the process.
Most recently, while undergoing the process with a client, I saw a curious looking animal peering through and it had the head of a deer with strong and well-defined antlers, and a sharp chin, big eyes and chiselled features. And it had a serene, soft and compassionate face, and exuded zen-like peace, composure, kindness and wisdom. But when it turned to leave, its body rippled with strength, and it had the back of a horse and flashed a long and lustrous tail similar to that of a horse. I was most perplexed because I had never seen an animal that looked like that. When the session was over, my client looked at me with awe and wonder, and asked me if I had seen the animal spirit guide that appeared to him. I said a tentative yes because I wasn’t quite sure what I had seen and couldn’t really classify it. Nevertheless, I described the physical appearance and characteristics of the animal spirit with as much accuracy as I could, and I noticed my client’s eyes widening. He told me he saw its face as well and then its long tail. It turned out that my client had seen the animal in a documentary show and recognised it to be a 四不像 or "a creature unlike any of the four." He only knew the Chinese version of the animal’s name and not much else but he sensed the presence of his animal spirit guide as being protective and reassuring. Intrigued by the curious being that I had seen, I dug deeper and researched this. To my surprise, this animal is the Pere David’s deer which, according to Chinese legend, dates back to more than 3,000 years ago to the time of King Zhou of Shang. As the legend has it, an ox, a donkey, a horse and a deer went into a cave deep into the forest to meditate on the day that the tyrannical King executed his virtuous minister, Bigan. The animals awoke from their meditation and turned into humans. They learned of the King's heinous acts and wanted to bring him to justice. So they transformed themselves into one creature that combined the speed of the horse, the strength of the ox, the donkey's keen sense of direction and the nimble agility of the deer. This new hybrid animal galloped to the Kunlun Mountains to seek the advice of the Primeval Lord of Heaven. Astonished by the sight of this creature which had the antlers of a deer, hooves of an ox, face of a horse and tail of a donkey, the Lord of Heaven exclaimed, "It's unlike any of the four creatures". After learning about the animal's mission, he bestowed his blessings and sent the creature to his disciple, Jiang Ziya, who was battling the King. Jiang Ziya rode the creature to victory over the King and helped to establish the Zhou Dynasty. After achieving its quest, the creature settled in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and became a symbol of good fortune. It was absolutely fascinating and not a coincidence at all for this animal spirit to be one of my client’s guides. In fact, my client’s name is David! It’s predestination. And the 四不象 or Pere David’s Deer represents justice and standing up for what’s right - which is what my client does naturally. And it also has a strong protection instinct which is why my client, despite being highly intuitive and having the ability to sense spirits, has never had a single psychic attack. What this eye-opening example illustrates is that animal spirit guides, interchangeably referred to as power animals or totems are all real animals eg wolf, tiger, owl, etc. These animals become spirit guides in the spirit realm. Animal spirit guides are a reflection of your deepest self and they resonate with you at your authentic soul level. They work from beyond the veil and the physical domain to empower you and help you stay in tune with your true self, your soul and inner psyche. They also offer healing, supreme and gentle guidance, protection, enable you to live harmoniously with the sky and earth, overcome fear and develop the qualities that they embody and acquire their positive attributes of being wise, strong, fearless, intuitive, etc. Work with your animal guides to develop balance in your life and growth in your personal path. They can appear in your dreams, your visions and during meditation and even in real life through direct encounters. I first met my animal spirit guide in my dreams. It was a recurrent dream. I was lost in an unknown environment and as fear began to take hold of me, I encountered a wolf which had the most piercing gaze and intense strength emanating from its eyes and entire being. I was transfixed and felt completely at ease and even comforted in the presence of this wild animal. I followed it and felt an incredible sense of inner strength, and a sense of purpose and resolute resolve wash over me and radiate from within. It was like nothing that I had ever experienced, and it was both vivid and real in my mind. I met the same wolf spirit when I went through a guided meditation to meet my spirit guides - a service which I perform today for my clients for them to meet their spirit guides. When it came to meet me in that guided meditation session, it had a message for me - that all my trials and challenges had prepared me for a greater purpose in life, and I was being propelled by the strength and power of a wolf as well its protective instincts towards its own kind. I had my visions confirmed when I went to the Oconaluftee Indian Village in North Carolina, USA. The Oconaluftee Indian Village is a "living museum" replica of an 18th century eastern Native American Cherokee community that is managed by the Cherokee Historical Association. There, I met the descendants of the wolf clan of the Cherokee Indians at an area that was dedicated to the revival of weapon making using materials from nature. The wolf clan descendants saw me and held my gaze for quite some time before one of them spoke and said, "You're one of us". Indeed, you can have one power animal or more than one animal spirit guide throughout your life. And you may even have the support and galvanising love of a past pet who continues to walk by your side from the realm of spirits. It’s important to be aware that in most cases, you do not have control over which power animal or animals you work with. Rather, on the contrary, your power animal chooses you. If you’re wondering when you will finally meet your animal spirit guides, understand that they will make themselves known to you when they choose to do so and when the timing is right. Learning how to identify, encounter and communicate with your animal spirit guide is a powerful and transformational process which dates back to ancient times whereby the quest to meet and commune with one’s animal spirit guides and other spirit guides from the astral realm was integrated into one’s daily life and spiritual practice. However, modern man has become more individualistic, rational and skeptical of all things and phenomena unseen and unempirical. And it is through meditation and conscious conjuring of one’s animal spirit guides that one is likely to come face to face with his or her power animal.
